About the Tea Ceremony
Over the years, our parent’s attempts at a traditional upbringing became diluted by urban life. So it was a huge surprise to both of us when we unanimously decided to have a traditional tea ceremony at our wedding. Somehow, it just felt right.
Weddings are a time of celebration and union. The journey to our wedding day really reinforced that we would be nowhere near where we are without the love and support of our amazing families and friends. The traditional tea ceremony is an opportunity for us to pay our respects to our ancestors and express our gratitude to our parents. An altar will be present to represent both Nguyen and Tran ancestors. During the ceremony, the bride and groom will bow to our ancestors and serve tea to our parents. Serving of the tea is a way to express our thanks for all the trouble we caused the past several decades. Drinking of the tea symbolizes acceptance of our partner into the family. The accompanying tea party is our way of opening up the traditional tea ceremony to allow everyone we love to participate. We hope it will be an opportunity for our large international families to meet, for elders to pass along any well wishes or advice to the bride and groom, and for us to eat yummy cake and pie before dinner.
